N🚫 business rules and processes are NOT the same as “business decisions”.

Business decisions are separate entities that drive business operations. There are cases where business decisions are rule-driven, meaning the outcome of the decision is based on decision logic driven by business rules. However, this does not mean that business rules and business decisions are the same concept.

💢Business Rule vs. Business Decision:
– business rules are criteria shaping the judgment
– business rules are more granular
– there are behavioral and structural business rules
– business rules act like a guardrail
– business rules are not modular (mostly because of their granularity)

🧐How do we know which set of rules to be activated? How do we know what rules are applicable at any point in time? The business decisions set a context for business rules to answer those questions.

Alternatively, the context of rules can be defined as part of a business process. However, business decisions organize the rules more efficiently than business processes. Business processes coordinate between systems, information, and actors. They ensure the correct information at the right time is available to the right people to act upon with the right tool. On the other hand, a business decision is a business question seeking an answer.

💢Business Decision vs. Business Process:
– the business decisions are hierarchical
– The relationship of its units (parts) generally is based on dependencies (steps in the process are based on order)
– business decision lifecycle is way shorter (mostly, with the exception to long-running decisions)
– changing business decisions is relatively less expensive than changing process
– the authority of business decisions is different
